Atalay Ata

Hi! I’m Atalay from Istanbul, Turkey. Currently I’m a junior undergraduate studying Molecular Biology & Genetics at Uskudar University. I have found VISRA while I was searching summer scholarship programs which should include hands on lab experience and mentoring by senior researcher. VISRA has fulfilled these features so well. In VISRA, one gets chance to conduct high quality research and to gain scientific knowledge for further studies. Not only research but also talking to a variety of brilliant minds throughout the program widens your horizon and overall thoughts about science. At Vanderbilt, I’m working with Dr. Aaron B. Bowman about gene-environment interactions in Huntington’s disease. My work mostly includes critical enzyme activity assays and protein chemistry. The overall scientific atmosphere and community in Vanderbilt are encouraging and influential from an undergraduate perspective. Other than the academic structure of the program, VISRA provides lots of social activities which make you love Nashville. I’ll be leaving from here with beautiful memories of Nashville, best of country music and of course glorious Vanderbilt campus! I recommend VISRA to all undergraduates who are interested in doing research and motivated by scientific notion. VISRA experience will be a huge advancement for you. Finally, I’d like to express my gratitude to VISRA coordinators and committee for their endless effort and support throughout the program.
