Sara Kalman (2011)
VU Mentor: Karoly Mirnics
My name is Sara Kalman. I am currently a third-year medical student in the University of Szeged, Hungary. This means that I have 3 more years until I get my medical degree. I participate in the research work of the Department of Psychiatry of our university for 4 years. Within the wide field of neuroscience I am especially interested in the mechanism of neurodevelopment, learning and neurodegeneration. After my academic years, I would like to do a PhD before my residency years.
At Vanderbilt I got the unique opportunity to work in Prof. Karoly Mirnics`s laboratory for 8 weeks. The main research topic of the lab is the neurodevelopmental theory of schizophrenia. We study the effects of the activated maternal immune system on the embryonic brain gene expression on mouse model.
**Sara returned to Vanderbilt under the Short-Stay Fellowship Program in Summer 2012 and continues to collaborate with Dr. Karoly Mirnics on projects started during her time at VISRA.
