Hello! I am Shahrukh. I was born and raised in Pakistan. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Bioinformatics from the COMSATS Institute of Information Technology Islamabad.
It has always fascinated me how the research environment varies from one country to another and even within a country. This is one of the main reasons that I applied to VISRA. I wanted to have a research experience in a completely new environment and interact with a diverse group of people. VISRA has been an amazing platform. I have been able to learn a lot here ranging from research techniques to how to write a good research paper.
I am working in Dr. Tony Capra’s lab in Department of Biological Sciences. I am working on a sub-project of a project of enhancer conversion across species. We are investigating the contradiction that the though the gene regular expression and transcription factors preferences are conserved across species there is still a large turn over in the enhancer activity.
I have really liked Nashville so far. The greenery here in Nashville and especially at Vanderbilt Campus is amazing. The thing that I have liked the most about VISRA is the balance between the research work and the recreational activities. We have been to Mammoth Caves, dinners, ghost tour etc. and I am so looking forward to White Water Rafting which is going to be so much fun. I am glad I came here. It has been a great learning opportunity.
