Mentor: Scott W. Hiebert, Ph.D.
Hola! I am Soumya from India. I am studying in Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee majoring in Biotechnology where I am going to enter my senior year this fall. I came to know about VISRA from one of my seniors who attended this program and spoke very highly of this program!
I was always interested in the mysteries of Cancer. Deactivation of tumour suppressor genes and activation of oncogenes triggers a whole cascade into body resulting into unwanted growth. The exact causes of these changes and the ways to prevent it at the root are what I wished to explore. Thanks to VISRA program I could learn about the modus operandi of available drugs for the treatment of Cancer.
My project here includes the synergistic effects of various Cdk (primarily 4,6 and 9) inhibitors on the growth of acute myeloid leukemia and its suppression. I work under Dr. Scott Hiebert whose lab focuses in the study of the molecular mechanisms of acute leukemia, cell cycle control, and the action of tumor suppressors. Everyone in the lab and the university are so helping and sweet that I never felt away from home.
I have cherished every moment here in Nashville. VISRA not only lays focus on research but makes sure that everyone socialises and gets time to enjoy by organising various trips. The schedule gives you ample time to research as well as to admire and explore happenings of Nashville! Through this program I was able to make friends from all over the world and got to know about the different cultures.
To sum up, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here be it research, the city life (including shopping), awesome trips. Of the most I loved the time spent with my fellow VISRA mates and my lab members. Thanks VISRA!
