Name: Surbhi Jain
Mentor: Claudia Andl
Heya! I am Surbhi from India currently pursuing Bachelor of Technology in Biotechnology from Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. I am going to enter the fourth and the very last year of my undergraduate studies this fall. Here at Vanderbilt, I am so delighted to be working in the laboratory of Dr. Claudia Andl from Cancer biology department, as the research in her lab matches my research interest.
The main focus of the lab is to investigate how signaling pathways related to TGFβ( Transforming Growth Factor) affect crosstalk between the epithelial and mesenchymal compartment. My project involves functional characterization of esophageal adenocarcinoma cell line FLO-1 ori with overexpression of Activin A(member of TGF superfamily) and development of a retroviral vector for overexpression of E-cadherin, a very important cell adhesion molecule. Also I am doing genotyping and Immunofluorescence staining to check metastasis of oral cancer in double knockout mice.
Nashville, the music city known for its southern hospitality, greenery, peace and what not! It stands up to its reputation; everyone is so helping and generous that you feel like staying here forever. The working environment is so exciting and fun. Also VISRA, which I think is a complete package balancing work and fun while taking care of your future too, is the most amazing opportunity you could ever get. The whole experience enriches you so much in every aspect, be it science, research, work ethics, vivid cultures. Through this program I got to meet people from all over the world which is really interesting.
From all the mentoring sessions to the GRE classes, there is so much VISRA offers, all you have do is seize the opportunity of being a VISRA participant. I would conclude by saying that I am pretty confident VISRA is going to be a very important milestone in my journey to follow my dreams (Cliché but true!).
