Chris began his scientific training at NEB as a high school intern in 1985. He went on to study biochemistry at Colby College and later obtained a doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In 2000, he started a research lab at NEB, working on the expression of proteins in eukaryotic microbes and studying glycosylation of secretory proteins. In addition to being a principal investigator, he is the Scientific Director of NEB’s Protein Expression and Modification Research Division, a position he has held since 2005. Over the years, he and his team have made numerous scientific contributions in the areas of yeast protein expression, GPI anchor biosynthesis, glycoengineering, glycan analysis and discovery of novel proteins that act upon glycans. In his personal life, he enjoys being with family, boating, fishing, and watching Boston sports.
