Short-term observational and research experiences are a part of the education and training mission of Vanderbilt University. Each year our faculty members sponsor observational and intern experiences for students visiting from local, national and international universities as well as high school students who are considering a career in biomedical research.
These opportunities are intended to provide a clearly defined educational training experience.
Intern: When someone engaged in such an experience is paid, either by Vanderbilt University or another organization.
Observer: When someone engaged in such an experience is not paid.
Minor: Any individual under 18 years of age.
Faculty Sponsor: A Vanderbilt faculty member who oversees the activity and involvement of the intern or observer while at Vanderbilt.
Designated Supervisor: A Vanderbilt employee or faculty sponsor who is directly responsible for overseeing the activities and involvement of the intern or observer while at Vanderbilt. The designated supervisor must be thoroughly familiar with the activities in which the person will be involved and the policies that govern that involvement.
The laboratory must be in full compliance with all applicable Vanderbilt safety programs and regulations. Minors must be directly supervised by the faculty sponsor or designated supervisor at all times while in the laboratory. Please see Guidelines for Minors in Vanderbilt University Laboratories.
Visiting student observers and research interns gain an opportunity for a mentored research experience while immersed in a laboratory environment at a research institution that conducts research of the highest quality with worldwide impact.
