Guidelines for Maximizing Success in the Immersion Phase

To support you in maximizing your success in the Immersion Phase, we provide the following registration guidelines and considerations. Please note: the official course requirements can be found in the Curriculum Policy and graduation requirements in the Degree Requirements Policy. These guidelines are designed for traditional path students taking two full years of the Immersion Phase as a supplement to official policies.

Important considerations when planning your schedule:

  1. Plan both Immersion years.
  2. Take at least 2 ISCs in year 3 to provide more flexibility in year 4, particularly for away rotations and residency interview season.
  3. Take at least 1 acute care and/or primary care course in year 3.
  4. Take as many LC units in year 3 as you reasonably can.
  5. Save at least one FLEX month to be used in November or January of year 4; residency interviews will span at least two months.
  6. If you anticipate missing multiple days in a course (e.g., due to attending a conference or life event), consider using a FLEX month to avoid missing multiple days in a course.
  7. You cannot take an FHD course or LC unit during the month when you take your Acting Internship (AI).
  8. Consider registering for at least one clinical course in the spring of year 4, to be best prepared for residency.
  9. You may only register for one year-long AE or ACE at a time.

Consider the following deadlines:

  1. The second Step exam must be taken by February 1 of the intended year of graduation.
  2. FHD-QI must be completed by block 10 of the intended year of graduation.
  3. Research Immersions must be completed by block 2 of the intended year of graduation.
