Understanding Structured Letters of Evaluation
Medical students applying to Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedics, or Plastic Surgery residency programs will need to solicit structured letters of evaluations for ERAS. These letters are sometimes referred to as SLEs or SLOEs. The letters are not a requirement set by the Vanderbilt School of Medicine. Instead, the requirement for and the contents of a structured letter of evaluation are set by a professional organization within each specialty.
Here are structured letter templates that students can review to better understand this requirement. Please note that these templates do change; the examples provided below were collected between April and June of 2024. We do not have a template from Plastic Surgery to share at this time.
