“I enjoy learning something new every day. Through teaching and mentoring, working creatively with staff and colleagues, and caring for pediatric patients, I am always grateful for the community and collaboration at Vanderbilt. I love being around people, and I strive to share my curiosity, joy and energy with others. I also believe each of us can make the world a bit better with a smile, a hug, a kind word and maybe a bit of chocolate.”
“Attending medical school can feel lonely. It is important for students to understand that there is a person who knows them and who is going to advocate for them. There is someone who knows the system, knows the curriculum and knows the context in which they are working,” Fleming says.
Fleming plays a significant role in guiding the fourth-year students through the residency match process each year. She watches with pride as Will Furuyama opens his Match Day envelope.
Quilting has been a hobby of Fleming’s for 30 years. “I give most quilts away, but my daughters have kept a lot of them.”
“Family is very important to me,” says Fleming, with her late husband, Geoffrey, and their three daughters in Alaska.
Fleming enjoys hosting medical students at her home. Here, she gathers with VUSM second-year students and her puppy, Lily. Soon after, she welcomed the new first-year students with another backyard picnic.
