Faculty Losses

William Cutter Alford Jr., BA’52, MD’55, HS’63, FAC, died July 29, 2020. He was 90. Dr. Alford was among the founding members of Cardiovascular Associates and was clinical professor of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Alford is survived by his children Allison and David and one grandchild.

Jeffrey David Byers, MD, FAC, associate professor of Clinical Dermatology and vice chair for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Dermatology, died Jan. 9. He was 54. Dr. Byers is survived by his wife, Janet, and children Jessica, Daniel, Stephen and Andrew.

Geoffrey Fleming, MD, FAC, professor of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, and Vice President of Vanderbilt University Medical Center Continuous Professional Development, died Dec. 8, 2020. He was 50. Dr. Fleming is survived by his wife, Amy Fleming, MD, MScHPE, associate dean for Medical Student Affairs, and their daughters Hannah, Virginia and Delaney.

James J. Madden Jr., MD, FAC, died Nov.1, 2020. He was 80. Dr. Madden formerly taught in the Department of Plastic Surgery. He is survived by his children Peter and Christina.

Samuel Rowe Marney Jr., the founder of the Division of Allergy and Immunology at Vanderbilt, died Jan. 7. He was 86. Dr. Marney is survived by his son, Samuel Rowe Marney III, of Memphis and granddaughters, Dylan Elizabeth Marney and Alexis Quinn Marney and their mother, Tara Gruet Marney; his daughter, Annis Morison Marney, and her husband, Glenn Gustus Dukes Jr., of Nashville, and their children, Ian Marney Dukes and Annis Kyle (AK) Morison Dukes; and his sister, Nancy Marney of Bristol, Virginia. Kate Payne, JD, RN, NC-BC, a bioethicist, attorney and nurse leader at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, died Jan. 6 after a very brief and unexpected illness. Kate is survived by her husband, Scott Weiss; her mother, sister and brother; and two nieces, a great-niece and great-nephew.

William (Russell) Ries, MD, FAC, died Jan. 5. He was 67. Dr. Ries was professor of Otolaryngology and Carol and John S. Odess Professor of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology. He is survived by his wife, Susie; children Katie, Russell and Robert; and two grandchildren.

Kenneth A “Ken” Wallston, PhD, Emer Fac Med, died on Oct. 27, 2020. He was 78. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Jonatha Gibuad.
