Charles Bentz, M.D., ‘70, died Dec. 8, 2016. He was 71. Dr. Bentz is survived by his wife, Lynn; children Kim, Ann, Eduardo, David, Daniel, Charles, Julie, Wayne and Eugene; and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Wyatt Blake III, M.D., ‘54, died Dec. 14, 2016. He was 88. Dr. Blake is survived by his children Kelly, Leslie and Richard; and six grandchildren.
Ben Bond, M.D., ‘55, HS ‘62, died March 30. He was 85. Dr. Bond is survived by his wife, Annelle; children John, Stephen, Betty and Anne; and two grandchildren.
Joseph Brito, M.D., HS ‘97, died Nov. 27, 2016. He was 60. Dr. Brito is survived by his partner, Sandy Joy, and her son, Joseph.
Stephen Bruny, M.D., ‘48, died Dec. 10, 2016. He was 92. Dr. Bruny is survived by his wife, Carol; six children and eight grandchildren.
Benjamin Caldwell Jr., M.D., ‘60, HS ‘65, FAC ‘00, BA ‘57, died May 8. Dr. Caldwell is survived by his wife, Gertrude; children Trudy, Sarah and Benjamin; and six grandchildren.
Herbert Chessin, M.D., ‘45, BA ‘42, died Nov. 25, 2016. He was 95. Dr. Chessin is survived by his wife, Judie; three children, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Ronnie Clements, M.D., HS ‘98, MMHC, ‘15, FAC ‘16, died Jan. 19. He was 50. Dr. Clements is survived by his wife, Kim; and children R.J. and Austin.
Robert Cochran Jr., M.D., ‘59, HS ‘60, BA ‘56, died Dec. 29, 2016. He was 82. Dr. Cochran is survived by his wife, Donna; children Robert, Heather and Charles; and seven grandchildren.
Catherine Condon, M.D., FE ‘69, died Feb. 18, 2017. She was 85. Dr. Condon is survived by her long-time friend Norma Jean; niece Kathleen and nephew Brian, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Thomas Duckett II, M.D., HS ‘75, died May 21. He was 75. Dr. Duckett is preceded in death by his daughter, Lee Ann, and is survived by his wife, Ann; son, Thomas; and two grandchildren.
Ronald Gable, M.D., HS ‘76, died April 29. He was 78. Dr. Gable is survived by his wife, Dianne; children Alicia, Ashley and Jeff, and two grandchildren.
Guy Gillespie Jr., M.D., ‘52, died June 5. He was 92. Dr. Gillespie is survived by his wife, Tay; children Julie, Guy, Sarah and Gordon; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Walter Gobbel, M.D., FAC ‘02, died June 9. He was 97. Dr. Gobbel is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; children, Margaret and Susan; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Frederick Haley, M.D., ‘75, HS ‘78, died Dec. 19, 2016. He was 67. Dr. Haley is survived by his wife, Mary, and son, Justin.
Joseph Hilsman, M.D., ‘41, died Jan. 18. He was 102. Dr. Hilsman is survived by his wife, Vangie; children Joseph, David, Clayton, Jenny and Ray; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Rev. Paula Hoos, Ph.D., ‘82, FAC ‘98, MDiv ‘01, died Jan. 24. She was 69. Dr. Hoos is survived by her husband, Richard; children Laura and Scott; and two grandchildren. In 1983 Dr. Hoos became the director of the VUSM Gross Anatomy course, a position she held for 15 years.
A. Everette James Jr., M.D., FAC ‘00, died March 14. He was 78. Dr. James was preceded in death by his daughter, Elizabeth, and is survived by his wife, Nancy; children Everette and Jeanette; and four grandchildren. Dr. James was the chair of the Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences from 1975 – 1991.
Arthur Katzberg, M.D., HS ‘50s, died May 12. He was 103. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances, and is survived by children, Stephen and Richard; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
William Kirk Jr., M.D., HS ‘81, died Jan. 10, 2017. He was 64. Dr. Kirk is survived by his children, Jason, Taylor, Ben and Katie; and seven grandchildren.
David Luthringer, M.D., HS ‘65, FE ‘66, died April 1. He was 80. Dr. Luthringer is survived by his wife, Peggy; children Andrew and Mark; and three grandchildren.
Henry McGill Jr., M.D., ‘46, HS ‘47, BA ‘43, died Feb. 23. He was 95. Dr. McGill was preceded in death by his wife, Clo, and is survived by his children Margaret, Laurie and Beth; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
H. Clay Newsome III, M.D., HS ‘77, died May 12. He was 69. He is survived by his wife, Lou Anne; children Jennifer; Clay and Patricia; and four grandchildren.
Gardner Rhea Jr., M.D., ‘58, HS ‘64, BA ‘55, died Nov. 24, 2016. He was 82. Dr. Rhea is survived by his wife, Joan; children Alice, William, John and Charles; four stepchildren, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Stephen Sugarbaker, M.D., HS ‘88, died June 21, 2016. He was 60. Dr. Sugarbaker is survived by his wife, Jane; two sons, five sisters, two brothers and many nieces and nephews.
Richard Sundermann, M.D., ‘51, HS ‘56, died Dec. 11, 2016. He was 91. Dr. Sundermann is survived by his wife, Cornelia; children Richard, John and William; and nine grandchildren.
Tom West, M.D., ‘51, died Jan. 23. He was 92. Dr. West is survived by his wife, Ruth; children Phyllis, Rebecca, James, Jeffrey and Paul; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

James Yount, M.D., HS ‘70, died Dec. 28, 2016. He was 75. Dr. Yount is survived by his wife, Mitzi; children Bradley and Stephen; and four grandchildren.
