Since our founding in 1874, when Vanderbilt University incorporated the University of Nashville’s medical program, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine has been shaping the future of medicine. From training the next generation of health care leaders to advancing medical education on a global scale, our commitment to excellence has remained steadfast.

In 1875, Vanderbilt University awarded its very first degree—to a medical student. Over the past 150 years, VUSM has remained at the forefront of innovation and discovery, pioneering groundbreaking vaccine production methods, revolutionizing heart surgery techniques, and laying the foundation for Nobel Prize-winning research and nationally ranked degree programs.

We invite you to explore our timeline of VUSM’s rich history, share your memories, and join us for special events as we celebrate this milestone year. Thank you for honoring 150 years of excellence with us and looking ahead to a future of continued innovation and impact.
