Vanderbilt Mourns the Loss of Conrad Wagner

Conrad Wagner, Ph.D.

Dr. Conrad Wagner passed away on March 13, 2023. Connie joined the Department of Biochemistry as an Assistant Professor in 1961 and maintained an active laboratory studying one-carbon metabolism and folic acid until becoming emeritus Professor of Biochemistry in 2015. His research was part of an internationally recognized division of nutrition within the department for which he received the Borden Award in Nutrition from the American Institute of Nutrition as well as a MERIT award from NIDDK.

In addition to his many important research discoveries, Connie made many contributions to the department and Vanderbilt. He took a leading role to advance teaching of metabolism and nutrition to medical and graduate students. He served as a member of the University Senate, Faculty Advisory Council, and interim chair of the department from 1991-1992. He also bridged Vanderbilt and the VA as chief of the VA Biochemistry Research Unit and Associate Chief of Staff for Research at the VA.
