Requirements for MSACI Application

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree. At least two years of relevant, post-undergraduate professional experience, education, or training is strongly preferred. GRE, MCAT, or other pre-professional equivalent test scores are strongly recommended.

Applicants do not need to have formal training in Computer Science or a related discipline, but they need to demonstrate a strong interest and aptitude in Clinical informatics. Students without a computational background are encouraged to take at least one introductory-level courses in computer science before entering the program.

Physician applicants who intend to apply for ABMS subspecialty in Clinical Informatics are encouraged to review the requirements on the ABPM web site.

All applications must include:

1. Statement of purpose
2. Standardized test scores
3. Degree program transcripts
4. Curriculum Vitae (include education, training, honors and awards, professional experience, relevant publications and presentations)
5. Three professional letters of recommendation
6. Answers to the three essay questions:
   • Describe key prior work or educational experience you have had related to clinical informatics and how they impacted your decision to seek graduate training in the field.
   • How will this program allow you to reach your personal, educational, or career goals?
   • Select one advancement in health informatics technology in the last decade of personal interest to you – how has it changed patient care or improved patient health?

Unofficial transcripts can be uploaded for initial review; however, official transcripts are required once an offer of admission is made and accepted and before the student enrolls in the first term. To be considered official, a transcript must be sent directly from your institution to Vanderbilt.

Admission decisions are made on an ongoing basis once all required application documents have been received and an application is ready to be assessed. Applicants who are admitted to the program will receive an email communication from the program director with further instructions and a deadline to accept the offer of admission.

International Applicants

International applicants are eligible to apply for admission to the MSACI degree program. International students are required to attend the one- to two-day sessions every semester via a conferencing platform during the hours set by the program (regardless of time zone differences).  International students also must complete synchronous course requirements via a video conferencing platform on Thursday evenings from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. CST each week, regardless of time zone differences. International applicants may be required to provide scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), which is administered by the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey. The Program requires applicants to meet or exceed a score of 600. International applicants who have obtained at least a masters level degree from an accredited US university are not required to provide TOEFL scores. Because of the program’s primarily online format, international students on student visas (F or J) are ineligible to participate in the program in person.
