I study the function and intracellular trafficking of Peripheral Myelin Protein 22 (PMP22). Fluctuations in the amount of PMP22 at the cell surface of Schwann Cells causes the peripheral neuropathy Charcot-Marie Tooth Disease which afflicts 1:2500 individuals. I am looking at how cells mediate the maturation or retention of this protein in the ER in hopes of identifying novel therapeutic strategies for treating this disease.
