Vanderbilt MPH student Kristy Kummerow, M.D., is the lead author of a study published in JAMA Surgery on the rising number of early stage breast cancer patients in the U.S. who choose to undergo mastectomy, including removal of both breasts, instead of choosing breast conservation surgery even when they have early stage disease that is confined to one breast. Other investigators on the study include Vanderbilt MPH Program faculty members David Penson, M.D., M.P.H., and Yu Shyr, Ph.D. Media coverage of Kummerow's research also appears in The Boston GlobeThe Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal.
