Commencement takes place each year on the second Friday morning of May. Students and faculty participate in a University wide ceremony on the Alumni Lawn, followed by a separate Medical School ceremony in Langford Auditorium.
Candidates receive the hood of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, and degrees are then conferred by the Dean. Selected faculty members serve as marshals, and the pomp and circumstance is awe-inspiring.
Each program housed in the School of Medicine has its own Commencement celebrations, like the Doctor of Medicine program Class Day. Taking place on the Thursday before graduation, outstanding students are recognized with awards in recognition of academic achievement and service to the school.
