The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists Summer Speaker Series: Distinguished Lectures in Drug Discovery

July 20 - Richard Silverman, PhD, 3:00, 214 LH

  • Patrick G. Ryan/Aon Professor
  • Chemistry Department
  • Northwestern University

Dr. Silverman's main focus is basic research into central nervous system disorders. More specifically, his research can be summarized as investigations of the molecular mechanisms of action, rational design, and syntheses of potential medicinal agents, particularly for neurodegenerative diseases. He is the author of more than 350 research publications, 71 patents, and several books. He is best known for the discovery of pregabalin, which is marketed by Pfizer under the trade name Lyrica.

July 27 - William Porter III, PhD, 3:00, 214 LH

  • Associate Research Scientist, R&D
  • Dow Pharma and Food Solutions

Dr. Porter researches cellulosic polymers for solubility enhancement of pharmaceuticals. He has worked on developing novel spray drying applications and led teams in innovative projects towards chemically improving the efficiency of spray drying. Prior to joining Dow, Trey was at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.

August 3 - Klarissa Jackson, PhD, 12:00 (during the VSSA Research Symposium), Engineering and Science Building

  • Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • Lipscomb University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

Dr. Jackson teaches drug metabolism, hepatic clearance, and toxicology in the professional pharmacy program at Lipscomb, and she is actively engaged in basic science research in drug metabolism and toxicology. Her current research focuses on investigating the role of drug metabolism in drug-induced toxicity to better understand the mechanisms and individual risk factors of drug toxicity.
