The School of Medicine Basic Sciences is launching a new lecture series: The Kairos Lectures, research of consequence at the right moment.

The Greek word kairos refers to the opportune or critical moment for action and embodies the spirit of this new series. Kairos Lectures are an invitation for our community to recognize the moments that matter: the right time to learn something new, connect across expertise, and move science forward together.

“The purpose of the Kairos Lectures is to expose School of Medicine Basic Sciences faculty, postdocs, and graduate students to the exciting research our colleagues are doing,” said Nancy Carrasco, chair of the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics. “It is our hope that the Kairos Lectures lead to new collaborations and open up new scientific vistas for our trainees.”

Scientific discovery advances rapidly, but progress within an academic community depends on more than individual excellence. It requires shared awareness: knowing what questions are being asked, what tools are emerging, what findings are reshaping fields, and where collaboration could accelerate the next breakthrough. Kairos Lectures will allow for recurring, structured opportunities to pause amid our busy schedules and reconnect with the intellectual momentum of our colleagues.

“The series will highlight the excellence of our science in the School of Medicine Basic Sciences,” said John Kuriyan, dean of the SOMBS. “I look forward to being educated and sharing the excitement of great science.”

We invite you to attend, learn something new, and engage with the vibrant research ecosystem across the SOMBS!

Kairos Lectures will take place throughout the year on the fourth Thursday of the month in 1220 Medical Research Building III. Invitations will be sent to SOMBS faculty, staff, and trainees in advance of each lecture.
