The blood brain barrier (BBB), specifically the brain microvascular endothelial cells, serves as the primary interface for blood-brain nutrient exchange. However, the underlying metabolic mechanisms regulating BMECs have not been well established. In this regard, BMEC metabolism represents an intriguing opportunity to gain insight into how disruption of cellular metabolic pathways may lead to BBB alterations, thus contributing to neurological diseases.
