The School of Medicine Basic Sciences is a remarkable community dedicated to advancing the study of human biology, health, and disease. In addition to the award-winning faculty, postdocs, and students who are at the forefront of our cutting-edge research, a large part of our school’s success can be attributed to our staff.
Join us in recognizing and appreciating our staff members and the hard work they do to facilitate the exceptional exploration into basic biomedical science that takes place at our school.
We sat down with Hannah Schaeffer to learn more about her and the work she does at Vanderbilt within SOMBS’s Warren Center for Neuroscience Drug Discovery.
How long have you been working for Vanderbilt?
I’ve been at Vanderbilt University for more than two and a half years. I began in the College of Arts and Science and transitioned to the WCNDD about a year ago. I support the executive director, Craig Lindsley, and manage a variety of administrative tasks, including staff onboarding, event coordination, website maintenance, marketing efforts, and other miscellaneous tasks. I also assist with marketing and website content for the Vanderbilt Institute of Chemical Biology.
What is unique about working for the SOMBS?
Everyone, regardless of their position, is always willing to lend a hand and work collaboratively. It’s truly a team environment.
What is a project that you are looking forward to?
I’m currently revamping the WCNDD website, which will include a virtual tour of our lab. I’m excited to share this with our community once it’s launched!
What is your favorite memory or project you have completed during your time at the SOMBS?
Anything marketing or website-related is something I’m truly passionate about! Social media management is my favorite, but helping launch VICB’s new website recently has been especially rewarding—seeing it all come together was a proud moment.
Who has had a positive impact on your work?
A HUGE shoutout to Kim Viviano, Marissa Shapiro, and Tia Patton! Each of them has been an incredible teammate and source of support. I’m grateful to work alongside such talented and helpful colleagues.
What professional or personal achievement are you most proud of?
Since joining Vanderbilt, I’ve been promoted twice. I started as an administrative specialist in the College of Arts and Science, where I moved up to administrative coordinator, and now I serve as administrative manager at WCNDD. Each role has broadened my understanding of Vanderbilt’s administrative operations and helped me grow professionally.
What is a fun fact about you?
I’m 28 years old and I visited the beach for the first time two years ago. I also went out of the country for the first time last year!
What activities to do you like to do outside of work?
CrossFit is my main hobby outside of work, but I also enjoy going to sports games, comedy shows, and concerts.
What is your favorite quote or book?
I don’t have a single favorite book, but recently I read Remarkably Bright Creatures and began the Fourth Wing series. Both have been captivating books so far.
