Please join us in congratulating Nancy Carrasco, Joe C. Davis Chair in Biomedical Science and chair of the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, for receiving the 2024 Award for the Biophysics of Health and Disease from the Biophysical Society.

Carrasco’s lab focuses on understanding the physiology of thyroid hormone biosynthesis and how it is affected by genetic mutations and environmental pollutants. Her work has been recognized by a variety of awards and memberships into academic and professional societies.

Now, the BPS has awarded Carrasco the Award for the Biophysics of Health and Disease for “seminal and elegant” biophysical approaches to characterizing the sodium/iodide transporter.

“Nancy relentlessly pursued the transporter responsible for iodide uptake into the thyroid, which she successfully cloned and named NIS, for more than a decade,” said BPS President Taekjip Ha of Harvard Medical School. “Nancy exemplifies the fundamental goals that the Award for the Biophysics of Health and Disease aspires to.”
