Mia Abernathy

How long have you been working for the School of Medicine Basic Sciences?

I started about seven months ago in early March 2024.

What is unique about working for the School of Medicine Basic Sciences?

I love every aspect of being involved in human resources. The School of Medicine Basic Sciences has allowed me the opportunity to work with many levels of leadership, and I’ve had the ability to gain more knowledge and understanding of how impactful Basic Sciences is to this community and others that it serves.

What is an upcoming project that you are looking forward to?

I am currently working with others on projects that will help streamline the first-year onboarding experience for new hires in the School of Medicine Basic Sciences. This will allow for a more improved employee experience and help contribute to the organization’s overall success.

What is your favorite memory or project you completed during your time at Basic Sciences so far?

My favorite memory would be my second day of work during the Basic Sciences’ quarterly staff gathering. I got to meet and greet the staff. Everyone was very welcoming and made me feel at ease taking on this new role in a new environment.

Who has had a positive impact on your work?

Tiffany Lawrence Givens! She is the chief of staff and assistant dean for administration for the School of Medicine Basic Sciences. Tiffany, who prior to her current role was the director of human resources for Basic Sciences, has continued to provide me with support and guidance as I’ve taken on this new role. Being in leadership requires adaptability, resilience, reliability, and building trusting relationships. Tiffany has allowed me the opportunity to do just that, and I appreciate her for that.

What is an achievement that you are most proud of?

In 2020, I published my first book, It’s Okay to Say I’m Sorry, But I Made the Choice Not to Live that Way, which is something that I longed to do for many years. My purpose for writing this book was to be transparent and to help others understand their purpose and to have a meaningful life.

What is a fun fact about you?

Both of my adult children were born overseas, one in Japan and the other in Germany.

What activities to do you like to do outside of work?

I love traveling abroad, eating exotic foods, and enjoying quality time with my family and grandkids.

What is your favorite quote?

My favorite quote is by me: “Self-love is one of the main ingredients to finding true happiness.”
