BASIC SCIENCES SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
ADADEMIC TRACK OVERVIEW
The School of Medicine Basic Sciences, Vanderbilt University employs three tracks for appointment of individuals to the full-time faculty. These tracks are complementary in that they are designed to accommodate faculty who engage in the wide variety of activities supporting the school’s mission, including research, teaching, and administrative service. Significant accomplishments in any of these areas represent important contributions that warrant careful consideration in the evaluation of faculty nominated for appointment or promotion.
The Investigator Track (tenure-track and tenured) is used for faculty with major efforts in both research and teaching.Faculty on the Investigator Track are awarded the titles of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor. The Investigator Track is the only track that leads to tenure.
The Educator Track is used for faculty with major effort in teaching and service. Faculty on the Educator Track are awarded the titles of Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor. Educator Track faculty are non-tenure track appointments.
The Research Track is appropriate for faculty involved in time-limited research projects with no or minimal teaching responsibilities. Faculty on the Research Track are awarded the titles of Research Instructor, Research Assistant Professor, Research Associate Professor, and Research Professor. Research Track faculty are non-tenure track appointments.
The School of Medicine Basic Sciences has four departments, Biochemistry, Cell and Developmental Biology, Molecular Physiology and Biophysics and Pharmacology.
