Marlene Jayne: “A Walk Down Memory Lane in Biochemistry”

December 13, 2016

Marlene Jayne shared an insightful and humorous 50-year Department of Biochemistry history with the Biochemistry Student Association. She also brought departmental paraphernalia for display. Marlene spoke to a rapt, standing-room-only audience, recalling at one point how a senior faculty member in attendance came to Vanderbilt as a graduate student. She talked about Dr. Stanley Cohen’s 1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the isolation of nerve growth factor and the discovery of epidermal growth factor.  Marlene concluded her talk by pointing out that the “baton” carried by past Biochemistry students and faculty is now in the hands of current graduate students, and she is confident in their ability to uphold the established tradition of mentoring and research.
