Here’s an ode to our furry (or not so furry) friends who have helped us study for anatomy practicals, kept us company while we wrote our papers and thesis dissertations, and welcomed us home after a long shift on surgery.
MSTPet: Flora (Brittany Spaniel)
MSTParents: Selby and Kevin Graepel (G3)
Age: 1 year old!
Research Question: How early you can wake your parents up and have them still love you?
Fun Fact 1: Flora loves chewing bully sticks, eating acorns, and gazing out the front windows.
Fun Fact 2: Flora can found on a buzzer at Fido!
MSTPets: Oreo (black and white pit bull), Geil (unknown breed, doggy adorableness), Leo (BIG white fluffy cat), and Horatio (orange tabby)
Ages: 3 years old, 7 years old, 9 years old, and 9 years old, respectively
MSTParents: Kelli Money (M4) and Tim Whitehead (Aerospace Engineer with private design firm)
Area of Research: Collaborative effort on behalf of the canines to understand the startle reflex of the felines.
Fun Fact 1: Geil serves as master of the house, keeping peace among his subjects.
Fun Fact 2: The biggest bully in the house is Horatio, the smallest of them all.
MSTPet: Izzy (aka Isabella Mushroom or Izzy Azalea)
Age: 3? years old
MSTParent: Meredith Rogers (G5)
Area of Research: Effects of nocturnal vocalization on human sleep patterns
Fun Fact: I'm fostering Izzy with Foster Cat, Inc. in Pittsburgh. (If anyone has any friends or family in the Pittsburgh/Western PA area looking to adopt a cat, please put them in touch with me!)
MSTPet: Leo (Rottweiler/Pit mix)
Age: 2 years old
MSTParent: Matt Wleklinski (G1)
Research Interest: Creating a desk chair that can fit both a dog and his owner.
Fun Fact 1: Leo’s favorite activities are cuddling and eating.
Fun Fact 2: It is also speculated that his head makes up 50% of his body weight.
MSTPets: Bella (fox red labrador retriever) and Mae (bull dog mix)
Ages: 9 years old and 5 1/2 years old, respectively
MSTParent: Dr. Sally York (MSTP Associate Director) and family
Bella’s Research Interest: Use of eye contact to psychologically manipulate humans to fetch her treats.
Bella’s Fun Facts: Bella loves being the best swimmer in the pack. She can generate drool strings as long as 12 inches.
Mae’s Area of Research: Testing the softness of any available pillow.
Mae’s Fun Facts: Mae is a rescue that we adopted to help Bella adjust to Nashville, but she likes pushing her sister’s buttons. She lets Bella do the begging for her.
