Leadership Workshop I Planned for April 2021
Matt Madden (G4)
Leadership Workshop I is a biennial day-long seminar for G1 and G2 students to develop skills often neglected in traditional graduate school curricula. Topics for the upcoming iteration of the workshop are organized by social context into self, paired, and group leadership, and include self-motivation and aligning values with your own and others’ careers; setting expectations and giving feedback; and group dynamics and coaching. Leadership expert Dr. Mark Cannon from Vanderbilt’s Peabody College will again serve as the workshop’s facilitator this year, and Michelin-starred Italian chef Tony Mantuano will give the keynote address.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the planning committee (Juan Colazo G2, Michael Rudloff G2, Thao Le G3, Maxwell Roeske G3, Lizzie Flook G4, Bryn Sierra, Dr. Chris Williams, and myself) postponed the workshop from October 2020 until April 2021 to increase the likelihood that it could be held in person or in small discussion groups. As a bridge until the Workshop in April, we asked Graduate Life Coach Stacey Satchell to lead a session on communication and expectations between advisors and advisees in early December for the G1s and G2s. We will continue to plan a flexible agenda for April to provide quality programming regardless of format.
