MSTP Senior Leadership Workshop

Twenty-one students attended the biennial MSTP Senior Leadership Workshop on Saturday, August 26th, 2017 at Alumni Hall. The purpose of this half-day workshop is to provide continued leadership training to students in their final years of the MSTP. Before the workshop, M3 and M4 MSTP students completed a survey to assess and reflect on their conflict management style, emotional intelligence, and leadership aspirations. During the workshop, students learned about emotional intelligence, navigating through conflicts in the workplace, and making leadership transitions through didactic sessions and case discussions. Shayna Humphrey, an Adjunct Professor at the Owen Graduate School of Management, introduced emotional intelligence and led the first case study in which students discussed how an intern should effectively handle disagreements with her healthcare team about the assessment of a patient. In the second case study, led by Kimryn Rathmell, M.D., Ph.D., students explored decisions and conflicts that a new faculty member faced in her new position and at home. Following a cocktail hour and dinner, a panel of dynamic leaders composed of Nancy Brown, M.D., Al Powers, M.D., Kimryn Rathmell, M.D., Ph.D., and Mark Wallace, Ph.D. answered student questions. Overall, students received concrete leadership skills and invaluable leadership advice that will allow them to succeed in the next stages of their career.
