Educational Offerings
The Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences provides educational sessions and enriching presentations to establish and foster a culture of inclusivity that embraces diversity at every level of our organization. These include the presentations offered by our Department as part of the October Diversity Series.
We regularly provide the following educational sessions to our department.
Understanding Bias: A necessary component to building equity and inclusion
This presentation is designed to support attendees’ ability to
- understand how unconscious bias impacts critical decisions, making interpretations, and everyday functioning.
- identify how an individual’s background can inform how one views the world as well as one’s clinical, teaching, and research.
- develop actionable steps to mitigate negative biases and to rethink bias and equity as an individual practices one’s clinical profession.
Microaggressions
This presentation is designed to support attendees’ ability to
- define microaggressions and describe how they create an unsafe clinical environment.
- list three approaches to address microaggressions.
- identify microaggressions in case-based examples and discuss potential response strategies to apply with colleagues
