2018 Health Equity Ophthalmology Student Program

This program is intended for medical students passionate in the area of health equity and creating equal opportunities for patients, faculty and staff, regardless of their race, color, national origin, age, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, religion, height, weight or veteran status.
The program is offered to two students between the first and second years of medical school.

Program Description:
The student will be exposed to the field of Ophthalmology in order to:
-address inequities and disparities in eye care
-understand the benefits of increasing diversity among the Ophthalmology physician workforce
-provide primary eye care to patients
-gain mentorship and guidance to be a competitive applicant to Ophthalmology residency programs
Curriculum includes a research project focused on evaluating inequities in eye care, clinical and surgical exposure, and participation in weekly grand rounds and department conferences. The student will be paired with a faculty mentor for professional and career development.

Who Should Apply:
Current M1s, from any institution
-Students interested in health equity, specifically within Ophthalmology
-A $2,500 stipend will be provided

Application Requirements:
Submit one letter of recommendation, curriculum vitae, and a personal statement outlining the following:
1. What motivated you to apply for this opportunity? 2. Please explain your projected career path.
3. Please list any applicable life experiences or factors (e.g. first generation college student, socioeconomic status) for consideration. 4. Do you have a project idea, promoting health equity within Ophthalmology? If so, provide a project outline (including: how you intend to measure project impact and how your project will lead to a sustained initiative). If not, state your interests for review and project suggestions may be provided, if available.
