Inova Children’s Hospital Underrepresented in Medicine Elective – (Application Deadline 05/31/18)

Inova Children’s Hospital values diversity and inclusion not only in our patients but also in our students,
residents, and faculty. We are committed to expanding racial and ethnic diversity amongst our providers to
reflect the broader community we serve. In order to reach this commitment, we are pleased to announce the
Inova Children’s Hospital Visiting Elective for Students Underrepresented in Medicine. This elective will allow
4th year medical students to serve as acting interns on either a general pediatric ward or pediatric intensive
care unit for 4 week rotations. Students will have the opportunity to care for a wide variety of patients at a busy
tertiary care facility as well as participate in the educational activities provided to the house staff. Students will
also have the opportunity to meet with the residency program director and will be invited to interview for our
pediatric residency program.

A stipend of up to $2500 will be provided to cover the cost of application fees, travel, housing, and meals. This
program will be open to individuals from backgrounds Underrepresented in Medicine including Black
(African/African American), Latino/Hispanic, Native American, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander. Applicants
must be currently enrolled at an LCME accredited medical school. Applications will be considered based on
merit, availability of stipend funds, and availability of open elective space between July and December of 2018.
Visiting students must follow the VCU SOM Inova Campus academic calendar.

7/16/18 – 8/12/18
8/13/18 – 9/9/18
9/10/18 – 10/7/18
10/8/18 – 11/4/18
11/5/18 – 12/9/18 (1 week break for Thanksgiving)

Brief statement discussing interest in this elective and the importance of diversity in medicine
The application deadline is May 31st, 2018. Applications will be reviewed by members of the Pediatric
Residency Committee on Diversity. Applicants will be notified within one month of receipt of completed
application packets.
