Medical Student Internships in Tanzania

Posted by on Thursday, November 15, 2018 in Uncategorized .

Since 2004 the PeerCorps Trust Fund in Tanzania has offered a medical internship program to medical students from around the world. In recent years participants have come from the United Kingdom, Canada and Finland.

The program begins with a week-long cultural, social and language orientation and culminates in a 4-8 week series of clinical rotations (or observation) at partnering hospitals and clinics throughout Tanzania. The intended goal of the program is to expose and familiarize medical students with the practice of healthcare in a low-income country setting. This also includes the development of skills and abilities related to intercultural communication, as well as an understanding of the various circumstances (political, environmental, social etc.) which influence health determinants in such settings.

The program is typically offered during the months of May-August and has been consistently rated highly by participants and their home institutions. Students are eligible to participate starting from the second year of their medical studies and there is no upper limit. Internships can be tailored to the wishes of participants and their home universities. Usually the following rotations are always available: obstetrics/gynecology, general surgery, internal medicine and acute care.
