Washington DC Health Policy Fellowships, Summer 2019

Summer is around the corner and there are plenty of opportunities to do research and volunteer. There are now opportunities to learn first-hand about health policy and advocacy. The Health Policy Fellowship Initiative is pleased to invite current first years to apply for summer positions as Health Policy Fellows in Washington D.C.
Fellowship sites include:
– American Academy of Dermatology
– American Academy of Ophthalmology
– American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
– American Society for Radiation Oncology
– Horizon Government Affairs
– The Joint Commission

The Fellowship is an intensive exercise in real-world policy and advocacy. Fellows not only complete a practicum at the specialty society but are also guided through a curriculum in health economics, health policy, public policy, and government relations. Fellows will be mentored by alumni and experts in the field and experience the full spectrum of policy.

Role of the Fellow at the Specialty Medical Society or Coalition Group

The Fellow will work for the Government Relations and Advocacy Department in whatever capacity is necessary for the society. This includes but is not limited to advocacy, policy, legislative issues, and lobbying. Examples of previous activities include:

1)   Advocating on behalf of the Society on the hill

2)   Researching, analyzing, and developing positions on policies, legislation, and bills

3)   Representing the Society at specialty society meetings

4)   Developing relations with and soliciting support from state and national organizations

5)   Developing CME materials for physicians

6)   Enhancing membership recruitment and organizational value to members

7)   Participating in the organizational meetings of the Board of Trustees and Operational Staff

Applicants for the national Fellowships should have interest particularly in Medicare issues, congressional issues, regulations, agency comments and reimbursement issues among other health policy topics.
