J. William Kohl Summer Scholarship for Medical Students

The Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Science at UC Davis is pleased to announce the J. William Kohl Summer Scholarship for Medical Students. This opportunity provides a stipend of $2,500 for students undertaking mentored research in the vision sciences. Four scholarships are available this summer.

Associated with this program is the J. William Kohl Research Travel Grant, which will consist of a $1,200 stipend per student. The travel grant is intended to defray the cost of travel to national ophthalmology conferences for the purpose of presentation of the research performed.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited U.S. Medical School, any year.
  • Interested in pursuing a career in ophthalmology.
  • Will perform either basic science research or clinical research.
  • Can dedicate a total of 8-12 weeks to a 2019 summer research project on a full-time basis.
  • Will present his or her work at the conclusion of the summer in a formal presentation.
  • Aim to submit the work at a national ophthalmology/vision science conference and for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Application Steps – Due March 1

  • Choose a topic from the list (download PDF) and/or contact a mentor UC Davis Ophthalmology & Vision Science. The applicant may propose their own project by contacting Dr. Baik.
  • Submit your application by March 1 to akbaik@ucdavis.edu
  • Date selections will be made April 1
  • Select arrival date in Sacramento/Davis with your mentor
  • Research for 8 – 12 weeks (Projects must be completed by August 31, 2019)
  • Formal Presentation
  • Submission to national conference, using allotted travel grant

Application Components

  • Discuss your interest in ophthalmology
  • What is your past experience with research? Please include a brief description of prior research projects with which you were involved.
  • Describe your proposed project with your mentor. Remember to contact him/her to discuss the project prior to submitting this application – research projects must be performed in conjunction with a basic science or clinical faculty member of the University of California, Davis Department of Ophthalmology & Vision Science. Your discussion should include: the question(s) you seek to answer through your project, research hypothesis, and if possible, the proposed methods.
  • Attach your updated curriculum vitae.
  • Provide 1-2 letters of reference and contact information for your references. References can be prior research mentors or instructors/professors from your coursework.
  • Submit a copy of your medical school transcript with coursework to date; unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
