Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine / Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago

Underrepresented in Medicine Visiting Medical Student Scholarship Program

Physician diversity is a key component to addressing racial and ethnic child health disparities, enhancing cultural sensitivity of all providers and driving institutional and academic excellence. Unfortunately, the racial and ethnic diversity of pediatricians in the United States is far less than that of children. The difference is widest when considering the academic pediatricians who are prominent leaders in research, advocacy, public policy, education, quality improvement, patient safety and healthcare administration.

Our Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) scholarship program was established to improve the diversity of academic pediatricians by exposing senior medical students from underrepresented minorities in medicine to academic pediatrics. Cutting-edge clinical exposure, networking, mentoring and special sessions will provide participants with the resources and information needed to confidently make decisions regarding their future training and to better serve diverse populations of children.

As a free-standing tertiary care children’s hospital serving the Chicago metropolitan area, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago is well positioned to provide prospective students exposure to a variety of patients ranging from bread-and-butter general pediatrics to medically complex subspecialty patients. Lurie Children’s Hospital serves a large racially, ethnically and economically diverse population of patients and has a long-standing history of significant neighborhood engagement through which to train our pediatric residents and improve child health.

In addition to a broad range of clinical rotations, students are also invited to attend morning report and noon conference daily, as well as weekly Grand Rounds and Firm conference. The Firm conference is a multi-disciplinary conference that reviews the course and differential diagnosis of a patient and the subsequent therapeutic plan. In addition to general pediatricians and subspecialists, this conference incorporates surgeons, pathologists and radiologists in reviewing the patient course. Our residents and medical students find this weekly conference to be an outstanding educational experience. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet with a residency program director and a chief pediatric resident.

Rotation dates:

  • July 1 to 26
  • July 29 to August 23
  • September 3 to 27

Participation in our UriM program includes enrolling in one of our pediatric electives which are offered during the above rotation dates. If you require minor variations in the dates, please contact us to discuss prior to completing your application. Up to $2000 of costs will be covered by this stipend program.
