As a joint venture between the Office of Diversity & Community Engagement, LSU Department of Pediatrics, and Children’s Hospital of New Orleans, we are pleased to sponsor a fourth-year senior medical student who plans a career in Pediatrics and wishes to experience a rotation in our academic medical center. Students must self-identify as an under-represented minority (URM) and display genuine interest in exploring issues of social determinants of health, population medicine, access to care, and social justice.
The Pediatric Residency Program at LSUHSC-New Orleans offers the enthusiastic student a challenging and rewarding training program. Our residents participate in the care of children with a wide range of pediatric illnesses, preparing them for a successful future in pediatric practice or academic medicine. The Department of Pediatrics is composed of outstanding faculty who are dedicated to excellence in teaching and a lifetime of service to children. Most students choose our program for the excellence in scholarship complemented by a friendly environment. Students who visit our program will quickly note the strong and close friendships which develop among the residents since teamwork is emphasized as an essential component of becoming a successful physician.
The LSU Health Sciences Center historically serves a large, metropolitan community with many under-resourced neighborhoods challenged by the social determinants of health and affected by health disparities. The historic mission of our training institution is to care for every member of our community, regardless of station or situation. Our residency program is based at Children’s Hospital, which is currently the only freestanding children’s hospital in Louisiana. Here, we provide compassionate, state-of-the-art care for our patients with over 43 pediatric specialties.
Students selected for the program will receive:
- $500 in travel assistance to New Orleans
- Housing in student residential facility in downtown New Orleans, adjacent to the medical school. Will require personal transportation to Children’s Hospital facilities.
- A resident and faculty mentor who will meet with the student during their rotation, to provide career and professional guidance as well as a personal connection to the community
