Diversity in Medicine Visiting Student Clerkship Award

OVERVIEW
The Office of Diversity and Inclusion of the Keck School of Medicine (KSOM) is excited to introduce the Diversity in Medicine Visiting Student Clerkship Award, which provides support for fourth-year underrepresented in medicine (UIM) medical students to participate in the KSOM visiting student clerkship program. KSOM defines UIM as being from racial/ethnic groups traditionally underrepresented in medicine including Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American/Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander. The award is designed to help build a comprehensive sense of connection on the Keck campus by leveraging the diverse array of experiences that exist among the Trojan family as well as in the distinctly diverse community of greater Los Angeles. The goals of this program are to:
· Increase awareness of opportunities in academic medicine for student groups traditionally underrepresented in medicine.
· Increase KSOM training programs consideration of qualified students traditionally underrepresented in medicine.
· Increase the number of UIM students applying to KSOM training programs.
PROGRAM DETAILS
Ø KSOM will fund a limited number of Diversity in Medicine Visiting Student Clerkship Awards from July to November to full time fourth-year medical students in good standing at accredited US medical schools.
Ø The program will provide a stipend of $2,000 to each recipient to help defray the costs of an away rotation.
Ø Housing is the responsibility of the awardee.
Ø Clerkships will last four weeks and are available in all clinical departments offering the fourth- year medical student rotations.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered:
· From a racial or ethnic minority underrepresented in medicine (URM) including Hispanic/ Latino, Black/ African American, Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander
· In good academic and professional standing at an LCME accredited medical school
· Accepted for a visiting student clerkship at the Keck School of Medicine of USC
MENTORING AND NETWORKING
Diversity in Medicine Visiting Student Clerkship awardees will be paired with a faculty advisor and offered opportunities to network with the KSOM faculty. They will be given the opportunity to have a personal meeting with the residency program director of their clerkship. If possible, recipients will also be paired with an UIM resident who will introduce them to the KSOM diversity community and its resources.
APPLICATION PROCESS AND DEADLINES
· Apply for the elective using the AAMC Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) application service
· Upon acceptance for an elective, submit the Diversity in Medicine Visiting Student Clerkship Award funding application with the required additional documents:
+ Personal statement discussing career goals (500 words or less)
+ One letter of recommendation
+ USMLE Transcript
+ Proof of acceptance as a visiting student at the Keck School of Medicine of USC
Submit the Supplemental Application to the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (Keck4DIM@usc.edu). Applications will be reviewed individually and awarded on a rolling basis. Once you have submitted your application, you will receive a confirmation email.
