2015 Summer Intensive for Entrepreneurship and Commercialization

This summer, the BRET Office of Career Development is offering a pilot short course for biomedical PhD students and postdoctoral fellows interested in learning fundamental business principles of commercializing a scientific innovation.

The 2015 Summer Intensive for Entrepreneurship and Commercialization is limited to 20 participants who will break into teams and develop a technology commercialization proposal and investment pitch. The course is ideal for trainees who want an introduction to the "language" of business, and trainees who are interested in entrepreneurship or a career in start-ups, technology transfer, business or consulting.

The Summer Intensive will be a prerequisite for PhD students and postdocs who may want to work on real client projects by auditing an engineering management course taught by Professor John Bers during the next academic year: Enterprise Systems Design, Technology Marketing, or Capstone Project.

The Summer Intensive will also serve as the foundation for a Biomedical Business Capstone course to be offered in fall 2015 (details TBA later this summer).

Course dates and times: Mondays and Thursdays from 9:00 AM-12:00 PM from June 22-August 3.

Instructor: Dr. John Bers, Associate Professor of the Practice in Engineering Management

Course structure: Flipped classroom model: online lectures and course material are reviewed out-of-class so teams can use class time to discuss how course concepts apply to their innovation.

Cost: No cost to PhD students and postdoctoral fellows in the biomedical sciences, thanks to a grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.

Eligibility: The course is open to Vanderbilt PhD students and postdoctoral fellows in the biomedical sciences, including biomedical engineering.

Attendance policy: Because the course is interactive and team-based, course participants need to attend all sessions and participate fully, including completing assignments outside of class. Participants should discuss time away from the lab with their research advisor in advance of the course. Anticipated absences, such as for scientific conferences, should be discussed with the course instructor.

Application: Applications are due June 2. Apply online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2015-Summer-Intensive-website
