The Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists is a highly successful program that utilizes resources across and beyond the New York Academy of Sciences. Established in 2007, the Blavatnik Awards program recognizes early-career scientists who have made innovative and interdisciplinary advances in the life and physical sciences, mathematics, and engineering. Up until this year, the Awards were limited to applicants from the New York tri-state area but due to the tremendous success of this program the Academy has been asked to extend its geographical coverage to include young faculty-rank scientists across the United States. The Academy believes that this exciting program is the future equivalent of the Nobel Prize but for young scientists.

SUMMARY:
As a Topic-Area Specialist in the area of Chemistry you will be responsible for and participate in multiple phases of the awards process to include as well as partner with the Executive Director and the other Topic-Area Specialists in Life Sciences and Physical Sciences in the stewardship of the entire awards process.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Working with the Executive Director and other members of the Awards team, conduct initial and ongoing identification and selection of judges and nominators
  • Review 300-500+ applications in broad disciplinary areas of expertise; evaluating each application according to a rigorous quantitative and qualitative evaluation form; participate in group meetings to make a case for the selection of each application.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for approximately 10 judges in the broad disciplinary area of expertise.
  • Assist with copywriting and copyediting of general promotional materials
  • Serve as one of many points of contact for public and media inquiries
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

  • PhD required in one of the following disciplinary areas: Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry & Structural Biology, Chemical Biology, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Chemistry & Biogeochemistry, Green Chemistry, Inorganic & Solid-State Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Synthetic Chemistry, or Theoretical Chemistry.
  • One-three years postdoctoral research experience in an academic, industry, scientific publishing, or related setting.
  • Successful candidate must have confidence and aptitude to evaluate applications beyond their primary field of study.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills. Experience, ability, and comfort in dealing with complex scientific information beyond own area of expertise. Experience with grant writing and program management a plus.
  • Ability to work with multiple teams across departments and to manage multiple parallel projects with tight deadlines.
