Predoctoral NRSA fellowships (F30 and F31) now funded by nearly all NIH institutes
Effective with the April 8 submission deadline, nearly all the NIH institutes and centers will now fund individual predoctoral NRSA fellowships (F30 and F31 mechanisms)! This is exciting news for predoctoral fellows, as previous to this change, only about half of the NIH institutes funded F30 and F31 predoctoral NRSAs. This change is in response to the recommendations made by the Biomedical Research Workforce Working Group of the Advisory Committee to the Director, NIH.
There are also other changes to the predoctoral NRSA program announcements. Applicants now need to include a description of the graduate program in which they are enrolled (including descriptions of degree program outcomes like average time-to-degree) as well as a specific description of professional development activities they plan to participate in during the award period.

Although nearly all institutes and centers will now be funding F30s and F31s, individual institutes and centers may have additional guidelines for eligibility. These guidelines are spelled out in the “Special Note” of the “Components of Participating Organizations” section of the program announcement.
