Description: The incumbent’s position in diets and cancer prevention will be conducting research investigating the effects of dietary fats, physical exercise, trace element selenium and their interactions in secondary tumorigenesis. Specifically, the incumbent will plan and conduct experiments, interpret results and prepare research reports for oral and written presentation, and have primary responsibility for developing and using various biochemical, cellular and molecular biological techniques to conduct experiments with animal and in vitro models, as appropriate, for testing specific hypothesis. This position requires a recent Ph.D. in dietetics, food, or nutrition or a related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. The assignment also requires: knowledge of the principles, theories and practices of molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, cancer biology in the context of nutrition, and a working knowledge of metabolism and animal physiology, the ability to plan and implement biomedical experiments, which includes the ethical and legal considerations pertaining to animal experimentation. Knowledge of statistics and the ability to use a computer and appropriate statistical software is needed, as is the ability to interpret, evaluate, and present research in reports and publications. Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard’s requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
