The Division of Intramural Research Programs (DIRP) of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), National Institutes of Health (NIH), invites outstanding individuals to apply for tenure-track positions in areas of clinical or translational research in mental health. The NIMH DIRP currently has clinical research programs to support new applicants in the areas of child and adult psychiatry, cognitive/affective neuroscience, mood and anxiety, psychosis, and functional imaging (MRI, PET, MRS, and MEG). These programs operate in one of the largest and most active neuroscience research communities in the world. Facilities include state-of-the-art neuroimaging and in-patient and out-patient programs within the NIH Clinical Center, all dedicated to research, and located on the NIH Campus, Bethesda, Maryland. A successful individual will be expected to develop and direct an independent research program focused on problems relevant to the mental health community. Outstanding individuals interested in neurodevelopment, cognition, mood and anxiety disorders, psychosis, and experimental therapeutics are particularly encouraged to apply. Candidates who make use of state-of-the-art techniques in stem cell biology, genomics/epigenomics, systems neuroscience, pathophysiology, population sciences/epidemiology, or experimental medicine to study problems relevant to mental health are also encouraged to apply. Each candidate must have earned an M.D. (or equivalent degree), an M.D./Ph.D., or a Ph.D. with a clinical background, and will have demonstrated the potential to become an outstanding independent investigator. An individual selected for a position is expected to build a dynamic and productive research group, mentor and train scientists, and make use of the excellent opportunities for collaborative, translational, and high-risk/high-reward science available at the NIH. Laboratory space and startup funds, access to shared research facilities, and on-going research support are competitive with premier academic institutions. Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments and a full Civil Service package of benefits (including retirement, health, life and long-term care insurance, and a Thrift Savings Plan) is available.
