The Chemistry Department of Washington University in St. Louis seeks a Facility Manager for the NMR and EPR Facility.  The Facility supports teaching and research, providing instrumentation and analytical resources to faculty and students within Washington University, and to the broader St. Louis region research community.  The NMR and EPR Facility, a Core Research Facility at Washington University, supports six NMR and one EPR spectrometer, and serves over 100 users annually spanning more than forty research labs/organizations. 

The NMR and EPR Facility Manager is the primary consultant, expert, training, and information source for NMR theory, practice, and data interpretation for the members of the Chemistry Department, other University users of the Facility, and for clients from outside the University.  Furthermore, the NMR and EPR Facility Manager directs and manages all day-to-day functions of the facility.

The NMR and EPR Facility Manager is responsible for:

  1. Directing the General Operations of the Facility, including serving as a consultant and expert on NMR spectroscopy and data analysis, managing the day-to-day operations of the facility, training all users, and implementing and enforcing safety and compliance considerations.
  2. Supporting Research by providing expert consultation in experiment design and interpretation of data, developing and implementing advanced techniques in spectroscopy, and collaborating with PIs in writing of publications for scientific journals.
  3. Supporting Teaching by designing experiments and collecting data in support of several undergraduate and graduate courses, guest-lecturing for courses in spectroscopy and analytical chemistry, and consulting with students during office hours in support of said courses.
  4. Financial Management for the Facility, including developing the annual budget for the facility, assessing and submitting detailed monthly bills to users, managing the fiscal year close-out process, ensuring the facility recovers all its costs, and determining the user fee schedule based on an annual financial analysis of the facility.

A PhD in Chemistry or a related field, with specialization in NMR spectroscopy is required for the position.  At least five years’ experience managing or assistant in operations of a similar NMR laboratory or facility is preferred.   Other critical skills and expertise for this position include:

  • Strong experience in theory of NMR
  • Extensive experience in practical, hands-on, NMR experiment design and interpretation of data
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Aptitude for financial management
  • Knowledge of EPR spectroscopy
  • Significant electronics experience, including diagnosis of problems and repairs
