The Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for implementing the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. This law gives FDA authority over tobacco products by adding a new chapter to the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The Tobacco Control Act gives FDA the authority to regulate tobacco products and manufacturers based on the best available science and CTP is responsible for both assessing and fostering that science-base. CTP’s actions have significant public health and consumer protection impact, and are among the most important issues faced by the Agency in its long and distinguished history.
This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Tobacco Products (CTP), Office of Science (OS), in Silver Spring, MD.
DUTIES:
- Design and develop research protocols using behavioral and social science perspective or public health issues and problems (both quantitative and qualitative research) and participate in the conduct of research on issues related to the communication of information about tobacco products such as those related to the labeling, advertising and marketing of tobacco products, health warnings, and education campaigns and how it affects consumer comprehension, judgment, knowledge and use about tobacco products.
- Review and analyze labeling and advertising, research protocols and analyses submitted to the FDA related to tobacco products and applies expert opinion to evaluate the potential impact of labeling and advertising on consumer comprehension, judgment, and knowledge related to tobacco products.
- Participate in the development of policy by providing expertise on current trends in social science, including, but not limited to cognitive, experimental, or social psychology, economics, sociology, and communications science as well as other fields relevant to the communication of health information.
- Prepare reports and makes presentations on research results to supervisors and peers internally, and professional societies and industry meetings externally.
- Analyze data obtained in studies designed to investigate comprehension, judgment, knowledge and behavior related to tobacco products.
