Job Description

The Program Director for Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Education (PD, P&P) is a leadership position with the responsibility of fostering a robust and dynamic predoctoral and postdoctoral program and community. Located at The Jackson Laboratory’s (JAX) Bar Harbor, Maine campus, the Program Director is responsible for the oversight, administration and program delivery for the predoctoral and postdoctoral education programs on the Bar Harbor campus. The Program Director is co-director of the Whole Scientist Program™. The PD, P&P is the primary liaison for internal groups including faculty members, predocs, postdocs and Human Resources. The PD, P&P is a standing member of the Training Committee. The PD, P&P coordinates and administers JAX-related external postgraduate collaborations that include partnerships with universities, medical schools and teaching hospitals. The position has primary responsibility for the program’s marketing and recruitment, enrollment and budget management. Incumbent provides guidance to and tracks the progress of 45 postdocs and 20 predocs.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide primary administrative and programmatic support for JAX MG internal and external predocs and postdoc programming.
Serves as the primary institutional liaison with JAX MG faculty, predocs, postdocs, and administrative offices.
Coordinate with Office of Sponsored Programs on JAX MG agency grant management; track fellowship slots and insure fulfillment.
In collaboration with the Director of Education, JAX GM, develop and implement strategy for preparing and recruiting postdocs into the JAX workforce.
In collaboration with Courses & Conferences and the Director of Education, JAX GM, develop short courses for internal and external audiences that support graduate student and postdoctoral fellows’ curricular and career planning needs.

Required Skills

Minimum of a M.S./M.Ed., Ph.D. preferred, with 3-5 years’ experience in predoctoral/postdoctoral training. At least five years preferred in an academic administrative position involving career and professional development programming, with a basic understanding of the science conducted at JAX.
Knowledge of standard scientific grants, including foundation proposals and training grants, and their formats, submission processes and budgets.
Experience with marketing and recruitment for pre/postdoc training programs.
Knowledge of post-award grants management, implementation and reporting.
Experience implementing social, community-building and life skills programming.
Demonstrated ability to execute results against strategic plans.
Ability to collaborate effectively with other members of JAX Genomic Education, the JAX faculty and administrative offices throughout JAX.
