Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Division of Epidemiology, Vanderbilt University Medical Center
The Division of Epidemiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join our active research group focused on social and genetic epidemiology of cancer risk. The research conducted within the Vanderbilt Epidemiology Center consists of clinical and population-based studies, primarily utilizing data from three large cohort studies (Southern Community Cohort Study, Shanghai Women’s Health Study, Shanghai Men’s Health Study) with stored biologic samples from approximately 225,000 participants, cancer consortia datasets, several genetic epidemiological case-control studies, and Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s databases of clinical, demographic and genetic data.
Our research and training program is designed for fellows to develop the skills necessary to be a successful independent investigator. The training emphasizes grantsmanship, initiating and carrying out research projects, written and oral presentation, and facilitating local, national, and international collaborations. Fellows will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of established projects, and lead their own research initiatives using a wealth of available data. The fellow will be mentored by a transdisciplinary team of successful NIH-funded researchers to achieve personal career goals and investigator independence.
The position offers up to three years of postdoctoral fellowship support, competitive compensation commensurate with experience, an excellent benefits package, tuition for coursework, travel to professional conferences, and funds for the fellow’s research projects. Additional research funds are available through internal pilot project funding mechanisms. Specific duties of the position include performing statistical analyses, writing manuscripts, and assisting in the development of grant proposals.
A successful applicant will be interested in researching the associations between genetic, social and behavioral risk factors for cancer risk. The fellow will be joining a research team where the overarching goal is to advance our understanding of the relations between racial and social determinants, genetic variants, and cancer risk with specific attention given to the influence of sociocultural factors and genetic determinants on health disparities in colorectal cancer risk. Individuals with the following characteristics will be particularly competitive for the position: a commitment to a career in cancer research, superior communication ability, and excellent quantitative skills.
Eligibility: PhD in epidemiology, genetics, cancer biology, population health, biostatistics, or a closely related field. Preference will be given to applicants with experience with cancer epidemiology and/or genetic analysis. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents. Candidates with prior postdoctoral training are also eligible to apply.
