Clubes de Ciencia Peru seeking instructors for summer science outreach program
Clubes de Ciencia Perú is a recently established scientific program aimed at recruiting highly-trained researchers to share their expertise, knowledge and passion for science. Access to cutting-edge technologies is limited in Latin America. Clubes de Ciencia Peru seeks to overcome these limits by serving as a platform for young students to experience the world of research: the conception of ideas, design, and execution of experiments, and communication of results.
Clubes de Ciencia Peru offered last July a one-week intensive hands-on research experience via twelve different clubs covering science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). During this week, students at the various clubs were given the opportunity to interact with experienced scientists in the field, develop short and innovative projects and share their results. During this first edition, we received a great support from the international community and received 400 applications for international instructors. After a labor-intensive selection process, 12 international instructors were selected for the program. Graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and senior scientists arrived from various places in the US, Canada, England, Denmark and Australia to share their expertise with 17 national instructors and 300 Peruvian students at no cost. Generous financial support from international and national companies and organizations allowed us to completely cover the transportation costs for our international instructors as well as the tuition and supplies cost of materials for our students.
Last year our students learned how to map with drones, about earthquakes and simulation models, neuroscience and electrophysiology, biotechnology and climate change, etc. We had a successful first edition last year and we are confident we will repeat the experience this year, but we need your support to make this happen.
We are calling all graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, senior researches and entrepreneurs in a STEM field to apply and propose a club for this second edition of Clubes de Ciencia Peru. Spanish fluency is not a requirement. We are currently accepting applications until March 15th, 2018 (23:59 h GMT-5). All travel and accommodation expenses for selected instructors will be paid by the program.
