Public Affairs and Outreach Director, The Biophysical Society (BPS), Rockville, MD

The Biophysical Society (BPS) is seeking a Public Affairs and Outreach Director to oversee the Society’s advocacy programs and efforts in support of the BPS mission and strategic goals. Reporting to the Executive Officer, the successful candidate will  monitor legislative and policy issues affecting BPS and the field of biophysics; oversee the development, management, and implementation of programs that communicate and promote biophysics and the Biophysical Society; manage and supervise the programs and outreach staff; work with the BPS leadership and Public Affairs Committee to develop reports, position statements, programs, and documents for internal and external audiences; develop and implement outreach advocacy programs that help build understanding of and support for the field of biophysics and the importance of biophysics research. 

Requisite skills for this role include excellent writing and oral communication skills, passion and energy for the job and its goals, strong work ethic and collaborative focus, ability to manage multiple overlapping deadlines and reprioritize and shift gears quickly while remaining diplomatic and responsive.

The successful candidate must have experience developing, drafting, and editing executive-level communications, must be an organized, detail-oriented self-starter with the ability to anticipate, manage, and staff a project, as well as guide and constructively oversee staff. 

Experience with a scientific organization or association and the federal legislative process is strongly preferred.  

Minimum bachelor’s degree in related field required; 3-5 years of diverse communications experience on Capitol Hill or within a member and/or advocacy organization(s); ability to inspire confidence within the organization and with external constituencies. The Director of Public Affairs and Outreach is also responsible for oversight of and collaboration with external consultants that support this function, and other duties as assigned.
