Life Science Tennessee (LifeSciTN) is a statewide, non-profit, member organization whose mission is to advance and grow the life science industry in Tennessee through advocacy, partnerships and alignment with economic and workforce development. Members include companies, universities, research institutions, government and economic development groups, and other industry associations involved in discovery and application of life sciences products and related services that improve the health and well-being of people throughout the world.
LifeSciTN conducts business and economic development activities; advocates on behalf of the industry; educates the public about the benefits of life sciences research and product development; and provides a network for the exchange of ideas, information and opportunities.
LifeSciTN will be offering an internship opportunity for fall 2018 that will provide meaningful experiences for an individual interested in the life science industry in Tennessee which may include:
1. Planning and execution of LST|CON, LifeSciTN’s one-day annual conference and meeting, taking place November 15th, 2018 at the 21C Museum Hotel, Nashville, TN. Attendees are industry professionals and leaders from around the state, region and country, and this event offering power networking and top educational content for life science professionals in Tennessee. Responsibilities may include:
- conference programming management
- copywriting for conference materials and collateral development
- industry outreach
- conference logistics and coordination
- administrative and organizational responsibilities
- assist LifeSciTN staff on-site with conference production
2. Support in the planning and coordination of (and attendance at) a one-day legislative caucus to visit the Hudson Alpha Institute in Huntsville, AL
3. Coordinate a team of volunteers to produce Life Science TN’s Academic Alliance Beer and Biotech networking monthly events in Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville and Chattanooga. (You do not have to be present at all the events.)
4. Potential opportunity to help in planning the annual State Policy Day which typically takes place in February in Nashville at Legislative Plaza. During our legislative “Day on the Hill” in Nashville we meet with legislative leadership and make presentations about the impacts and opportunities for industry growth in Tennessee. We close the day with a reception for legislators, staffers and members. Responsibilities may include:
- life science and health care policy research
- copywriting for policy collaterals
- industry outreach
- elected official outreach
- administrative and organizational responsibilities
Internship Details:
- This is a paid, part-time internship
- We expect the intern to work approximately 8-10 hours a week primarily remotely on projects determined at the beginning and throughout the internship period.
- There will be regular in-person meetings with LST staff for progress updates and planning
- Intern must be available to attend the full LST|CON meeting in-person to support the execution of the conference on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at the 21C Museum Hotel, Nashville, TN
- We are looking for a candidate with strong writing, project management and interpersonal skills who excels in time and task management.
- The internship will begin in August and run through December, with the possibility to extend pending review.

Eligibility requirements
- Applicants must be a current Vanderbilt University PhD student or a current postdoctoral fellow.
- All PhD students must have completed all coursework for their degree prior to the start of the internship.
- Biomedical PhD students must also have passed their qualifying exams before the application deadline.
- Students and postdocs may not participate in more than one internship at a time. More than one application may be submitted at a single time, but only one position can be accepted.
- If you are not in a department supported by the BRET office, we will also require that you complete a form guaranteeing PI approval to participate in this program. Please contact Ashley Brady at ashley.brady@vanderbilt.edu for more information.
